Ashley E. Kim Duffey is a PhD candidate in art history under the supervision of Professor Jenn Marshall. She holds a minor in American Studies. Kim Duffey's research focuses on the role of photography in recording, producing, and responding to conditions of post-war American empire. Her dissertation, "(Re)visioning Kinship: Photographies of U.S.-Korean Adoption," takes up the role of photography in U.S.-Korean adoption since the Korean War. Chapters consider, in loose chronological order, popular press photography; bureaucratic and referral photography; family photography; and contemporary adoptee-artists' photography, to argue that transnational Korean adoption serves as a tool of American empire.
