Melissa graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Advanced Human Development and Family Science. While at UT-Austin, she examined the intergenerational transmission of ethnic identity among Mexican American families. She became interested in examining other cultural factors that could impact the mental health of ethnic minorities. Currently as a Doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Minnesota she examines family dynamics that impact the well-being of ethnic minority adolescents and young adults. Specifically, she is interested in how parent-child relationships (e.g., parenting style and relationship quality) and parenting behaviors (e.g., cultural socialization) impact ethnic identity development, cultural values, and mental health outcomes among Latinx individuals.
