Hannah Wiepke is a PhD Candidate studying with Dr. Michael Gaudio. Her research focuses on print culture, knowledge production in early modern Europe, and the intersections of art, science, and technology. Her dissertation project “For pictures are the most intelligible books”: Crafting Knowledge in Early Modern Printed Images and Books, 1500-1700 considers how users actively engaged with printed images and the material book writ large as they crafted an understanding of the world around them. Through a case study model, her project looks to the emerging disciplines of geography, anatomy, and ethnography and the ways in which these developing fields of study relied on the medium of the printed image to immerse their users in a sensorial experience in order to create empirical knowledge.
