The University of Minnesota's American studies graduate program is one of the oldest and most highly regarded programs in the nation. We have consistently led the way in defining the field.

Our faculty and alumni's scholarship and teaching have been recognized internationally. We are usually ranked among the top four American studies graduate programs in the nation, along with Harvard, Yale and Brown. Our graduates receive jobs in outstanding research universities and liberal arts colleges in the United States, Japan, England and Norway.

The Department of American Studies is committed to increasing diversity in our graduate program. We are innovators in interdisciplinary research and teaching, and we are currently in a confederation with the Chicano, American Indian, African American & African studies, and the Asian American studies programs.

  Faculty choose institutions that attract the best graduate students. We need to ensure the excellence and competitiveness of our graduate programs so that we can compete for the best faculty and emerging scholars.
• A diverse and engaged undergraduate student body
  Although we are attracting better students than even before, too many outstanding students choose other institutions. The deciding factor is often finances. Merit- and need-based scholarships are essential to our success in recruiting these talented students.

Choose a Fund

To remain competitive, we need your support for our funds that support graduate and undergraduates. We have three funds that may interest you.

• David Noble Graduate Research Fellowship
  This fellowship fund was established to honor David Noble's more than 50 years of teaching. Students receive funds to support their Ph.D. training.
• Mulford Q. Sibley Scholarship Fund
  This scholarship provides tuition, fees, and money for research and related expenses for undergraduates and graduates.
• William C. Nelson American Studies Scholarship Fund
  This fund provides scholarships for American studies undergraduates.
