Major & Minor
The Asian languages & literatures department offers the following three program options:
- BA in Asian languages & literatures with subplans in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Hmong, Japanese, and Korean
- Minor in Asian languages & literatures with subplans in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Hmong, Japanese, and Korean
- Certificate in Advanced Chinese
The requirements for the major and minor combine language study and ALL courses that provide a firm grasp of fundamental interpretive and theoretical issues that have defined the fields of Asian studies.
A major in Asian languages and literatures pairs well with other fields of study such as film and media studies, global studies, history, technology, environmental studies, and business.
Majors and minors are encouraged to study abroad or participate in overseas internships. These experiences strengthen your language skills, deepen your understanding of Asian history and culture, and sharpen your awareness of global perspectives. Students travel to such cities as Amman, Bangalore, Beijing, Chengdu, Fez, Harbin, Kunming, Shanghai, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Seoul, Sharjah, Fez, and Bangalore.

The purpose of the Certificate in Advanced Chinese is to recognize students who have reached an advanced level of proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese (ACTFL Advanced, ILR 2), along with training in literary Chinese and cultural literacy.
