The Language Flagship: The National Initiative

An Innovative Partnership

The Language Flagship is a national initiative of the National Security Program within the Department of Defense that leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing a new paradigm for advanced language education. Through an innovative partnership among the federal government, education, and business, The Language Flagship graduates students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals. The Language Flagship community commands a superior level of proficiency in languages critical to US competitiveness and security.

Combining Academic and Professional Interests

Students in The Language Flagship program combine their academic and professional interests with an intensive study of a target language. The Language Flagship graduates possess a superior level of:

  • Language proficiency in a target language.
  • Advanced cultural skills and experience living and working abroad.
  • Intercultural insights for careers in federal government, global business, nongovernmental organizations, and other fields.

As a network of 27 Flagship programs at 22 institutions of higher education across the US, The Language Flagship currently provides instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, and Turkish.

The Chinese Flagship program at the University of Minnesota is one of 13 Chinese Flagship programs in the nation and one of two Chinese Flagship programs in the Midwest.
