Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies Emphasis

Overview

The Graduate Research Partnership Program (GRPP) encourages graduate students enrolled in graduate programs housed within the College of Liberal Arts to partner with a CLA faculty project adviser on projects of shared interest.

This particular GRPP fellowship is for students who would like to partner with core and affiliated faculty members of the Departments of Chicano Studies, American Indian Studies, African American and African Studies, and the Asian American Studies Program. The program provides GRPP fellows with a summer research stipend of $3000 for summer 2012. This GRPP may be used for pre-dissertation or dissertation research.

Eligibility

The competition is open to graduate students in CLA. Students are ineligible if they have incompletes in official program coursework from a prior term on their transcript. As a condition of the award, GRPP fellows may not hold summer appointments in excess of .25 FTE, except to teach a May term course. Students receiving other University of Minnesota fellowships during the period are ineligible for the GRPP fellowship. Students may hold external fellowships if the request is approved by their departments' GRPP selection committee. Students may not register for courses while they hold a GRPP Fellowship.

Review and Selection Criteria

Each application will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members from the participating units: Program of Asian American Studies and the Departments of American Indian, Chicano Studies, and African American and African Studies. The applications will be evaluated for

• the quality and significance of the scholarship or creative work proposed;
• the relevance of the proposed project to African American and African studies, Chicano studies, American Indian studies, Asian American studies, and/or comparative race and ethnic studies;
• the value of the experience to the graduate student's academic development;
• the value of the fellowship for the scholarly/creative achievement of the project;
• evidence that the student is making timely progress toward degree;
• the commitment of the faculty advisor to devote reasonable mentoring time to this project;

Priority will be given to students whose work emphasizes comparative race and ethnic studies. Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously had a GRPP.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted by a graduate student currently enrolled in a graduate program in the College of Liberal Arts with the endorsement of a tenured or tenure-track CLA faculty member. A graduate student may not participate in more than one application for each round of funding.

As a general rule, faculty members may participate in more than one application but should not serve as project advisor for more than two award recipients in a given year.

Application forms must be submitted electronically to aaas@umn.edu for consideration by the GRPP selection committee. The application materials should include

• the Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies GRPP App
• the project proposal
• a budget proposal (see page 2 of the application)
• a two-page curriculum vitae
• a U of M graduate transcript for the student.
