Job Placements & Achievements

Our PhD graduates hold tenure-track or tenured positions at major public universities, elite private universities, and leading liberal arts colleges, as well as at smaller regional or state university campuses.

Other PhD alumni choose careers in professional editing or writing, museum curation, college administration, foundations, nonprofits, and businesses. These graduates are employed, for example, at university presses such as Oxford, Temple, and Minnesota, businesses such as Apple, and institutions such as Minneapolis’ Museum of Russian Art and the T. J. Martell Foundation.

We provide extensive support for graduate students on the academic job market. Our students have a thorough training in teaching as well as in research. Preparation for the job search includes review of students’ job search materials; workshops on search topics (for example, the application process, interviewing, on-campus visits); and mock interviews conducted by faculty members. The department provides a page of job search resources on the department intranet and pays the MLA membership fee for job seekers in the first and second years on the market.
