Advising

The French studies and Italian studies advisors will meet with prospective and current students to discuss their placement and progress in the program. Students should meet with their advisor at least once a year to ensure they are making timely progress toward degree completion.

French Studies Advising

Students currently enrolled in FREN 1001-1004 who are thinking of continuing their French studies and/or who wish to talk about study abroad options, as well as transfer students wishing to take French classes, should email Trina Whitaker (frenstds@umn.edu) to set up an online appointment.

Advising appointments for questions about the French major, FRIT major, FREN minor, and/or study abroad, will be done via zoom. Students can make an appointment on the Google calendar (see below) and will receive the zoom website address for the meeting in their confirmation. Students can also email frenstds@umn.edu if the available meeting slots don't fit their schedule.

To schedule an appointment about upper-level courses, study abroad, or declaring a major/minor, please reserve a slot on the FRIT Advising Google Calendar using your UMN email account.

• Before using Google Calendar appointment slots, please make sure that you are logged into your university email account and that Google Calendar is set to Central Time (do this by accessing Google Calendar settings; the time zone there is not necessarily the same as the time zone to which your computer is set).
• Do not schedule yourself for more than one appointment slot at a time unless you have received prior permission from the advisor.
• If you discover that you cannot attend an appointment you have scheduled, please cancel it ASAP, as a courtesy to the advisors and to other students who might be able to use the appointment slot.
• Do not attempt to use Google Calendar to schedule an appointment outside of official office hours. If you absolutely cannot make an appointment during office hours, then please email frenstds@umn.edu to inquire about availability. In your email, include your name, the reason for your appointment, and two proposed appointment times of 30 minutes on two different days of the week.

Italian Studies Advising

Students interested in declaring or learning more about the major or minor in Italian Studies or learning about study abroad in Italy are welcome to schedule an appointment through the FRIT Advising Google Calendar using your UMN email account.
