PhD in Germanic Studies

The PhD in Germanic Studies is designed for students with an interest in the interdisciplinary study of German literature, culture, and media. The program offers individualized opportunities to pursue innovative approaches to the study of literature and culture, and to develop expertise in teaching in a wide variety of contexts. Students without an equivalent MA are admitted to the PhD program but must complete the requirements for the Germanic Studies MA before continuing on to the PhD requirements.

Requirements

The requirements for the PhD in Germanic Studies include:

  • Minimum of 30–36 credits: 18–24 credits in the major, 12 credits in outside courses or a minor
  • Course requirements include: one introductory course, five elective courses in German and/or Scandinavian literature/culture, a dissertation seminar. Students with an MA from another institution will also need to take one theory course and a pedagogy seminar.
  • Oral and written preliminary examinations
  • Minimum of one year of teaching
  • Dissertation
  • PhD final oral exam

Students have the option of selecting an emphasis (German or Germanic Medieval Studies), though this is not required. The requirements for an emphasis are: four of the five electives and the dissertation topic must be in the emphasis.
