International Students

As a globally ranked university, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is an excellent choice if you are an international student pursuing a doctorate in history. The metropolitan area offers you a vibrant, culturally diverse community, while the department offers world-renowned faculty with global connections who specialize in a variety of thematic, temporal, and geographic areas. You will find that it is well worth the time and energy it takes to apply to the graduate program in history.

If you are applying to the program, you must complete an online application. The requirements and instructions for the application can be found here

University policy requires international applicants (and domestic applicants whose native language is not English) to provide proof of English language proficiency as a condition of admission. More information on this policy can be found here. If you have taken 16-semester credits or 24 quarter credits of post-secondary coursework within the past 2 years in the United States, Canada (except Quebec), the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or most current and former British and US territories in the Caribbean/Central and South America the requirement for taking an English Language Proficiency test can be waived.

Upon offer of admission, students must complete the enrollment form and begin filling out the financial certification document in order to receive the I-20 in order to start the visa application process. You can find more information about this process on the International Student and Scholars Services Office website. If you have further questions about this process you can contact the History Graduate Studies Office histdgs@umn.edu
