KATHERINE E. SULLIVAN SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships for 2008-09 (Updated September 2007)

PURPOSE AND SPONSORSHIP

The Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship provides an opportunity for seniors at any campus of the University of Minnesota to enrich their academic experience with a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country. The Office of International Programs grants these awards, and Honors-College of Liberal Arts, Twin Cities Campus, is responsible for the selection of recipients.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Sullivan Scholarship will cover all or a portion of in-country educational expenses (tuition, fees, books, and research costs), room and board, essential daily expenses, and round-trip transportation between the Twin Cities and the study site. Sullivan Scholarship applicants are expected to apply for other scholarships or grants for which they are eligible that could be applied toward any of the above expenses. Financial support from the Sullivan Scholarship will supplement, but not duplicate, benefits from other such grants or scholarships. In other words, the total amount awarded from all sources combined may equal, but not exceed, the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, essential daily expenses, and round-trip transportation to the study site.
The University expects to award 1-3 scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year, depending on funds available, the budgets submitted, and the quality of applications.

TYPES OF STUDY

The scholarship is intended to support credit-bearing and usually classroom-based study abroad that immerses the student in the host university, research institute, or other institution, as well as in the host culture. Proposals should be for a full academic year or equivalent. Typical scholarship recipients earn 30 semester credits.

Although the Sullivan Scholarship is not limited to University of Minnesota-affiliated programs, recipients must work with their study abroad office to register for Foreign Study (FOST or FST) credit through the University in order to receive the award.

APPROVED DESTINATIONS

The Sullivan Scholarship may be used for study anywhere outside the United States, with some exceptions. Travel to countries on the U.S. State Department travel warning list requires approval from the University of Minnesota Education Abroad Suspension Committee. You may view the travel warning list at http://travel.state.gov/travel/warnings_current.html. For information on submitting a petition to the Education Abroad Suspension Committee, contact your study abroad office. With regard to study in Cuba, the University holds a license authorizing certain types of educational travel. Consult your study abroad office for details or visit the University’s Cuba travel website, http://www.international.umn.edu/travel/cuba/.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

1. Be currently enrolled undergraduates in any college at any University of Minnesota campus.

2. Have completed at least 30 semester credits in residence at the University of Minnesota by the end of fall semester 2007.

3. Have senior status (at least 90 semester credits) by the end of fall semester 2007 and be making regular progress toward the degree.

4. Normally have an overall GPA of no less than 3.50.

5. Be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

SELECTION

Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic record and promise; relevance of the proposed study to academic and career plans; sufficiency of academic preparation as well as degree of proficiency in the language of the proposed country of study; strength of the personal statement and the faculty recommendations; past involvement in relevant extracurricular, volunteer, and work activities; and evidence of maturity, emotional stability, adaptability, and respect for other cultures.

The selection committee will review all applications and interview a limited number of applicants. These interviews will conducted on Tuesday February 26, 2008, and finalists must be present in person on the University’s Twin Cities campus for their interview. All applicants will be notified of the results by mid-March.

Before the scholarship is released, the recipient must show formal evidence of having been accepted for admission by the host institution, and must be registered through the University for Foreign Study credit. Recipients must retain their undergraduate status until completion of the study abroad and are expected not to graduate until the resulting credits have appeared on their undergraduate transcripts. Applicants from the Twin Cities campus who would like to graduate in Spring 2008 if they do not receive the scholarship should follow normal procedures for applying for the degree; the degree application may be withdrawn later if the scholarship is awarded. Applicants from the coordinate campuses should consult their study abroad advisors about graduation issues.

APPLICATION DEADLINE AND FURTHER INFORMATION

All application materials must be received or postmarked no later than February 8, 2008. A study abroad advisor’s signature is required on the application form. Applications and inquiries concerning the scholarship should be directed to Honors-CLA.
