CLA Assembly and the "State of the College" Address on September 19, 2006

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the CLA Assembly on Tuesday, September 19 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey Center, West Bank campus. The agenda includes the "State of the College" address by Dean Steven Rosenstone and the introduction of new and visiting faculty. Reception will follow in the atrium. Winning External Grants Luncheon on September 20, 2006

Department Name Change

The Department of Women's Studies has changed its name to the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

Professor Sikkink named Regents Professor
Kathryn Sikkink
(political science) was named Regents Professor. Her work on human rights has made her a world-renowned scholar of comparative politics and international relations. The Regents Professor title is the highest faculty honor conferred by the University.

2006 McKnight Presidential Fellows Award
Ben Munson
(SLHS) and David Treuer (English) were named McKnight Presidential Fellows for 2006. The McKnight Presidential Fellowships are awarded to faculty recently promoted to associate professor and are accompanied by three years of research support.

Gordon Legge (psychology) received an honorary doctorate from the University of Montreal, the highest distinction a university can bestow on any individual.

Kathryn Pearson (political science) was awarded the Carl Albert Award of the American Political Science Association for the best dissertation in legislative studies.

Paul Sackett (psychology) was named the Beverly and Richard Fink Distinguished Professor in the Liberal Arts.

Gary Schwitzer (journalism and mass communication) was awarded the Knight-Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism for his work on the http://www.healthnewsreview.org website. He also received funding from the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making in Boston to continue his work on the project.

John L. Sullivan (political science) was awarded the Philip E. Converse Best Book Award of the American Political Science Association for Political Tolerance and American Democracy, (University of Chicago Press, 1982).
