Internal Without Salary Appointments

Questions concerning internal without salary appointments in the College of Liberal Arts should be directed to the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty.

General Statement

Internal Without Salary Appointments are used by CLA academic units (tenure-home units) to extend formal affiliations or courtesy appointments to regular (tenured and tenure-track) faculty who hold base appointments in other colleges at the University of Minnesota. These affiliations or courtesy appointments are known more formally as without salary (WOS) appointments.

Examples of appropriate without salary appointments may include: a) a faculty member in the Law School who wishes to have an affiliation with History or Philosophy; b) a faculty member in the Carlson School of Management who wishes to have an affiliation with Economics; or c) a faculty member in the Medical School who wishes to have an affiliation with Psychology.

Graduate School Committee Member WOS appointments (job code 9996) do no fall under the CLA WOS process. Please follow the existing business process for completing these appointments. The process can be found under “Graduate Faculty” on the CLA Graduate Programs page (http://cla.umn.edu/intranet/grad/).

Guidelines

  • In most cases, CLA will consider WOS appointments only for regular faculty (tenure-track or tenured) in other University of Minnesota colleges or schools, and at a rank equivalent to the faculty member's base appointment.
  • The tenure-home unit (outside of CLA) making the request for a WOS appointment in a CLA academic unit should supply CLA with a curriculum vitae and any other relevant information about the faculty member (i.e., the candidate). This information can be submitted to the college to facilitate the process, or directly to the unit.
  • The faculty of the CLA unit who are equal to or senior in rank to the candidate will consider the request according to department norms and practices. The unit head will prepare and submit a recommendation to the college on behalf of the unit faculty.
  • The nature of the collaboration of the non-CLA faculty member with the CLA unit, as well as any rights and/or privileges that will be extended to the WOS appointee will be determined by the CLA unit on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with the associate dean for faculty, and will be reflected in a letter of appointment. Examples of rights and privileges that may be extended include a listing on the department website, access to graduate students, participation on department committees, voting privileges, etc.
  • Internal WOS appointments are established for a defined period of time (typically one to three years). Start- and end-dates normally correspond to the University's B-term appointment periods.
  • Internal WOS appointments may be renewed for an additional term or terms, subject to the mutual agreement of the unit and the appointee, for as long as the appointee holds a regular faculty appointment elsewhere at the University.
  • Units are expected to manage their internal WOS appointments to ensure that the number of these appointments is appropriate for the unit's size, that the appointments are consonant with the unit's mission, and to ensure that renewals are processed in a timely manner.
  • Review and approval of all WOS appointments and renewals will reside with the associate dean for faculty.

Procedures and Forms
