Scholarly Events Fund

Purpose

The College of Liberal Arts offers assistance to help defray the costs of scholarly events organized by CLA faculty, or in which faculty play a major role, especially when such events promise to make known to the broader community the strengths of the scholarly activities of the College.

Support is available for events that involve the public presentation or enhancement of faculty scholarship, including conferences, lecture series, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, performances, etc. Applicants are encouraged to involve faculty from other departments and institutions in the planning or implementation of their project.

Administration

Funding requests ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 are administered by the college. Applications for events planned in 2010 (1 January through 31 December 2010) are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs by 9 October 2009..

Scholarly Events Fund Applications

Application Deadline – Friday, 9 October 2009

Scholarly Events Fund applications must identify the type of event, date, time and location. Applications must include a description of the event's purpose, its intellectual content, and the anticipated impact on faculty research and/or instruction. The application should identify the intended audience, include a program outline, and identify individuals planning the event, as well as invited participants. The involvement of other University units and outside institutions should be described and plans to publicize the event should be specified.

If funding for a scholarly event was requested and granted during the budget planning process, the event is not eligible for additional funding through the Scholarly Events Fund. Please check with your department Chair or administrator to determine if collegiate support has already been received.

Applications must include a detailed budget that includes income and expenses, and identifies all other sources of funding support (indicate funding requested, pending, granted, denied). Applications must indicate the amount of funding requested and include a PeopleSoft Chart String. The event description should not exceed 1,500 words. Please submit only one copy of your application materials.

Review Criteria

Requests for scholarly events funding will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • the event's promise of high scholarly or artistic quality;
  • the event's appeal to faculty, students, alumni and others beyond the originating department;
  • the event's potential for demonstrable impact upon faculty scholarship or creative activity, and/or instruction;
  • the degree and quality of planning for outreach and publicity within and beyond the University community;
  • the commitment of support or participation from the originating unit;
  • the identification of possible sources of external support, when appropriate.
