Conducting

Master of Music (MM)

With program emphases in choral, orchestral, and wind ensemble/band conducting, this degree is designed to guide the student toward the development of fluency in the language of conductorial gesture and to encourage the establishment of a unique artistic identity while fostering the understanding of the diverse roles of the conductor. It is recommended that students spend two academic years in the completion of this program.

Choral Conducting Emphasis Requirements: Minimum of 30 credits.

1. Emphasis: 15 Credits

  • MUS 8450 Seminar in Graduate Conducting: 6 credits
  • MUS 8237 Score Studey: Choral: 6 credits
  • MUS 8255 Choral Literature: 6 credits
  • MUS 8299 Performance in Choral Conducting (with supporting paper): 6 credits

2. Supporting Program: 15 Credits

  • MUS 5xxx/8xxx Courses from the areas of musicology/ethnomusicology and theory/composition, with a minimum of one 3 credit course in each area, taken at the University of Minnesota: 9 credits
  • Students in this program are required to participate in a school of music chorus each semester in which they are in residence. Ensemble credits may count toward electives in the supporting program.

3. Electives, 5xxx/8xxx (music or non-music): 6 credits

4. Conducting Recital. This final recital is fulfilled within MUS 8299 listed above.

5. Final Oral Examination. A final oral examination of approximately one hour’s duration will be administered by the student’s examining committee. It will cover coursework, the recital, and supporting paper.

Orchestral Conducting Emphasis Requirements: Minimum of 30 credits.

1. Emphasis: 15 Credits

  • Mus 8450 Graduate Seminar in Conducting: 12 credits (3 credits/semester)
  • Mus 8489 Performance and Document: Orchestral Conducting: three credits

2. Academic Component: 15 Credits

  • Mus 5561 Orchestration I: 3 credits
  • Mus 5562 Orchestration II: 3 credits
  • Mus 5xxx/8xxx Course(s) in musicology/ethnomusicology taken at the University of Minnesota: 3 credits
  • Mus 5xxx/8xxx Course(s) in theory and analysis taken at the University of Minnesota: 3 credits
  • Music Elective: 3 credits

3. Conducting Recital

4. Examination. A final oral examination will be administered by the examining committee covering the course work, performance, and document.

Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting Emphasis Requirements: Minimum of 30 credits.

1. Emphasis: 15 Credits

  • Mus 8450 Graduate Seminar in Conducting: 9 credits
  • Mus 8479 Performance and Document: Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting: 3 credits
  • Mus 5xxx Ensemble participation: 3 credits
