CLA Authors & Alumni: Schumacher and Angress
On April 6, 2022, Award-winning author and CLA Regents Professor of Creative Writing Julie Schumacher (English) brought author Antonia Angress (MFA '21, creative writing) to a virtual discussion about their work, The Shakespeare Requirement and the forthcoming Sirens & Muses, respectively; the writing process; and all things academia—satirical and otherwise.
This event was sponsored by the CLA Alumni Online Book Club.
Antonia Angress was born in Los Angeles and raised in San José, Costa Rica. She is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Minnesota MFA program, where she was a Winifred Fiction Fellow and a College of Liberal Arts Fellow. Currently living in Minneapolis, Sirens & Muses (Ballantine Books), due out in July, is her first novel.
Julie Schumacher graduated from Oberlin College and from Cornell University with an MFA in fiction. Her first published story, “Reunion,“ written to fulfill an undergraduate writing assignment, was reprinted in The Best American Short Stories 1983. Subsequent stories were published in The Atlantic, Ms., Minnesota Monthly, Stiller’s Pond, and Prize Stories 1990 and 1996: The O.Henry Awards.
Her first novel, The Body Is Water, was published by Soho Press in 1995 and was an ALA Notable Book of the Year and a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Schumacher’s other books include the national best-seller, Dear Committee Members (winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor); The Shakespeare Requirement, Doodling for Academics (a satirical coloring book); and five novels for younger readers.
