Career Exploration

We’ve tapped the robust media market in Minnesota to give you an opportunity to hear personal stories, background, and advice from a wide variety of media practitioners.

Before the Explore Careers project, small groups of honors students conducted in-person interviews and did job shadowing to learn about mass communication professionals in the Twin Cities. Today, every student can learn about the careers and work of mass communication professionals.

We asked Twin Cities professionals in strategic communications and journalism about their careers and advice for students:

  • What was your path to get into this field?
  • What is most exciting about your job?
  • What do you wish you had done or known before you got this job?
  • What role does technology play in your job?
  • How do you think this role is changing or has it changed over the years?
  • What do you look for in a new hire?
  • How does a new person in this career get started?

The Explore Careers project was made possible with the support from the Course Transformation Project (CTP), which provides resources and support to help integrate technology into the classroom and provide technology resources for students. We thank all of the professionals who took part in the project for their time and talents.

The project was led by School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) faculty members Kathleen Hansen, Seth Lewis, Nora Paul, Amy Sanders, and Jennifer Williams, all of whom teach sections of JOUR 1001, Introduction to Mass Communication.

A significant proportion of the work was conducted by SJMC Communications Manager Sarah Howard and SJMC Events Coordinator Sue Couling. Video editing services were provided by Alexa Hunt. CLA-OIT staff members Celina Byers and Karen Swoverland provided technical and logistical support.
