The Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Program is one of the advising communities within the College of Liberal Arts, and is available to any CLA student who appreciates an environment that embraces and fosters multiculturalism. MLK provides advising services that encompass every major that CLA offers (including pre-professional programs i.e. pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, etc.) and supplies the information and support students need to succeed at the University and gain the most from their CLA education. Keeping in touch with the MLK community helps students stay on top with what's happening in CLA as well as what students need to graduate!
In addition to advising services, being a part of the MLK program allows you access to additional services and resources.
Computer Lab and Free Printing
Students can utilize MLK computers to work on their assignments, scan, and do various things needed for class. There is also a 7-page free printing limit per day and if students need to print more, they can just supply their own paper.
Events and Programs
Throughout the semester the MLK Program hosts different advising sessions or workshops in collaboration with other offices/programs. We'll bring students information directly from the source. In the past, the Learning Abroad Center, the School of Nursing, the University of Minnesota Law School, and other campus offices and programs have visited us in MLK.
Low Student-to-Advisor Ratio
Students in the MLK Program have better access to their advisors because of our small student rosters. Better access also means better relationships with the advisors. In the MLK Program, students are not just numbers, but individuals with great stories and experiences that we value.
The advisors, including the peer advisor, are available to answer questions daily. Students can see any advisor during walk-in times for quick questions regarding registration, course addition/cancellation, major/minor information, graduation, second language, etc. Please check with the front desk to inquire about our drop-in schedule, or view the schedule here.
Degree Audits (Graduation Planning)
As students get close to graduation, it is always recommended that they meet with their advisors to make sure there are no surprises. The graduation planning appointment reviews all requirements, including liberal education, major/minor, second language, and ensures that all questions regarding requirements are answered.
A Gathering Spot
Looking for a place to kick back and relax, meet friends, and study? MLK provides a space where students can get a "home-away-from-home" feel. There is often candy at the front desk, study tables to do work and eat lunch, and snacks throughout the semester.
A Warm and Inclusive Community
MLK is a community of students who come from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Every one counts. Making connections is important to us, and with our student/advisor ratios we take pride in getting to know our students and building relationships.
