Joseph Whitson works at the intersection of environmental humanities, indigenous studies, and public history. His dissertation uses digital ethnography to analyze American public land and the outdoor retail industry through the lens of settler colonialism, interrogating the connections between environmental representation and indigenous resource dispossession. He is the founder of Indigenous Geotags, a digital humanities project highlighting the indigenous history of public lands, and serves as co-chair of the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Workshop.
