Jonny Quenga Borja

Portrait of Jonny Quenga Borja

Jonny Quenga Borja (they/gui’/he) was born and raised in Guåhan (Guam) and comes from the Aguilat and Inda families. Jonny is a queer, CHamoru Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a minor in Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender, and Sexuality (RIDGS) Studies. Utilizing a methodology and theory of their making, sasa'dang (straddling), Jonny examines how queer CHamorus were obfuscated in Guåhan history and historiography and their contemporary roles in decolonization and self-determination movements in Guåhan. Primarily, however, Jonny is not concerned with unearthing or reviving queer CHamoru existence within "traditional" archives; rather Jonny seeks to create a new archive through oral histories with queer CHamorus who contribute to critiques of setter colonial and imperialist ideologies of Guåhan and Indigenous peoples more broadly.
