This 75 percent position will provide material and digital instruction on 3D digital fabrication software and equipment to undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty in the Department of Art’s XYZ Lab. Assist in the integration of 3D digital fabrication technologies into Department of Art curriculum and research activities. Provide technical support for the Drawing, Painting and Printmaking (DPP) facilities in the Department of Art. Maintain, repair, design, and build equipment in the XYZ Laboratory and in the DPP Area. Responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment within assigned areas. Reports to the Facilities and Technical Coordinator.

Laser Cutter

XYZ Laboratory Technical Instruction - 40%
• Demonstrate a broad range of techniques and applications of software and equipment used in art making processes in the XYZ Laboratory and 3D digital fabrication facilities
• Demonstrate equipment uses to accomplish educational and research goals providing a broad knowledge of the XYZ Laboratory and DPP studio operations
• Expert user and instructor of 3D digital fabrication software and equipment including Rhino, CNC Enroute, Coral Draw, Photoshop, Universal laser software, Illustrator and/or Fusion 360
• Collaborate with teaching faculty to integrate digital fabrication processes and methods into courses across Department of Art curriculum
• Provide students with technical reference materials that supplement course instruction
• Develop and maintain XYZ Lab instructional materials - digital and hardcopy
• Work with Department of Art Communications Coordinator to maintain and distribute the XYZ Laboratory blog site and web presence on the Department of Art website

Equipment Safety and Maintenance XYZ Lab and DPP Area - 30%
• Ensure safe and efficient operation of the DPP Area and the XYZ Laboratory equipment (CNC Router, Universal Laser Cutters, 3D Printer, Ceramic 3D Printer, Ceramic Multi-Color Digital Decal Printer) and teaching facilities in the DPP Area
• Test and maintain equipment in assigned areas to ensure proper working condition and that safety standards are met
• Trouble shoot and repair XYZ Laboratory equipment
• Assess the needs of the XYZ Laboratory and the DPP Area for new equipment, research new products, and present best product information to area faculty for discussion of future purchases
• Provide safety oversight, training, and equipment safety demonstrations for classes utilizing the XYZ Laboratory and the DPP Area facilities
• Provide technical and safety support to students using tools and equipment in the XYZ Laboratory and the Drawing, Painting and Printmaking Area
• Instruct students in solving technical problems with building objects in the XYZ Lab and the DPP Area facilities
• Manage hazardous waste in the assigned areas

Supervision - 20%
• Hire, train and supervise student staff to support the XYZ Lab
• Coordinate and supervise TA duties with DPP Area Faculty Representative and DGS
• Hire, train, supervise, and schedule temp/casual employees working as figure models for drawing and painting courses

Purchasing and Fiscal Oversight - 10%
• Purchase supplies and equipment in assigned areas
• Maintain inventory of consumable goods for assigned areas
• Research vendors and pricing to find the most economical source for supplies and equipment
• Forecast and plan for large expenditures of equipment and supplies
• Keep the Facilities and Technical Coordinator informed of inventory and fund balances

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in studio arts with an emphasis in digital fabrication
• Four (4) years of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight (8) years
• Experience with two or more of the following 3D digital fabrication software and equipment: Rhino, CNC Enroute, Coral Draw, Photoshop, Universal laser software, Illustrator and/or Fusion 360
• Experience with two or more of the following equipment: CNC Router, Universal Laser Cutters, 3D Printer, Ceramic 3D Printer, Ceramic Multi-Color Digital Decal Printer
• Certified forklift driver or ability to be certified soon after hire
• Knowledge and training experience of safe practices in studio art
• Ability to instruct students in the safe operation of equipment and materials in assigned areas
• Experience with purchasing and budgeting of equipment and materials
• Ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff

Preferred Qualifications
• MFA degree in studio arts with emphasis in digital fabrication
• Experience with all of the following 3D digital fabrication software and equipment: Rhino, CNC Enroute, Coral Draw, Photoshop, Universal laser software, Illustrator and Fusion 360
• Experience with all of the following equipment: CNC Router, Universal Laser Cutters, 3D Printer, Ceramic 3D Printer, Ceramic Multi-Color Digital Decal Printer
• Certified forklift driver
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent problem solving skills
• Computer proficiency
• Knowledge of facilities and equipment in assigned areas
• Knowledge of materials and processes used in assigned areas
