Hungry For After: MFA Thesis Exhibit

The Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota presents Hungry For After, an exhibition of seven artists about to complete their Master of Fine Arts degree in the Department of Art. The exhibition runs April 27 - May 14, 2021 and includes works by Nicholas Bauch, Sayge Carroll, Brandon Chambers, Rini Keagy, Grant McFarland, Caitlin Skaalrud, and R.C. Tibbott.

With a background in cultural and historical geography, Bauch invites the viewer to commune with various landscapes through a range of interactive experiences. Guided by their ancestral knowledge, Carroll builds objects and environments that merge physical and virtual space, opening a doorway between multiple worlds. Driven by a desire to give form to the unacknowledged, Chambers creates sculptures, moving images, and works on paper that honor the unknowable. Resisting hierarchical and linear structures, Keagy’s moving image practice equalizes subjective and archival material to engage with sites of historical and psychosocial trauma. McFarland’s hand-made utilitarian objects challenge notions of value from the perspective of the artist versus the consumer. Using comics as a medium for the dead, Skaalrud invites ghosts to tell their stories from beyond the grave. Tibbott combines clay, processes of repetition, and artifacts from his military service to investigate an object’s potential once it has withstood its intended use.
