Sociocultural anthropology major and Asian American studies minor, 2017.
Marilyn Keo grew up watching a lot of Chinese kung fu movies and Asian dramas that featured Asian leads in vastly diverse roles, which is virtually unheard of in American mainstream entertainment. From there on, she became critical of Hollywood's representation (or lack thereof) of Asians, Pacific Islanders, and other minority groups. Once she entered the University, Marilyn took her first Asian American studies course where she learned more about Asian American history than had during her entire K-12 schooling experience. As an Asian American studies minor, she is interested in learning more about the Asian American experience and what it means to be Asian American within the context of language, history, and contemporary culture.
