Center for Austrian Studies - 2025 Summer Graduate Research Fellowship Application Now Open
The CAS Graduate Research Fellowship provides financial support to currently enrolled University of Minnesota PhD students to further their progress towards degree completion. The Center for Austrian Studies will award one (1) graduate fellowship in the amount of $6,000, for use in Summer 2025.
Eligibility: Applicants must be fully matriculated UMN graduate students who specialize in Austrian or Central European Studies. Applications from all disciplines are welcome.
Application for CAS Graduate Research Fellowship: The appropriate parties should e-mail the following materials to the Center for Austrian Studies ([email protected]) by 4:30 p.m. on March 7th, 205 with the subject line: “2024 CAS Graduate Research Fellowship.”
Part One - Combined PDF that includes these three sections:
Section I. A two-page proposal describing the scholarly research to be undertaken during the summer, and how this work directly relates to the applicant’s progress towards degree completion. If applicable, please include information regarding required travel and its estimated duration.
Section II. A one-page statement of academic progress, listing:
- Year of entrance into the applicant’s graduate program
- Dates of proposed or completed PhD prelims; dates of proposed or completed prospectus meeting; and dates of proposed PhD defense
- (If applicable) any remaining degree requirements to be completed, with a schedule for completion (e.g., language certifications)
Section III. Names of other summer award competitions, to which you are currently applying; as summer funding is limited, it is expected that applicants to CAS summer fellowships also submit funding requests to our partner centers (e.g., CGES, CRIDGS, IHRC, Jewish Studies, Premodern Studies, etc.)
Part Two: Unofficial transcript
Part Three: Letter of recommendation from the applicant’s advisor (sent separately to [email protected])
Selection Process: A faculty committee will evaluate applications and submit its recommendations to the CAS director. Notification of awards will be sent in April 2025.
NOTE: Due to the volume of applications received, proposals from advanced (i.e., post-PhD-prelim) graduate students with demonstrated research travel needs will be given priority. Applicants who have an “incomplete” on their record at the time of application are not eligible for this award. At the end of the award period, recipients must also submit a one-page project report that specifies the project outcomes completed, and (if appropriate) allow the Center for Austrian Studies to include these outcomes in its publications and reports sent to funding sources. Past recipients who do not submit this report will be ineligible to apply for future funding requests.
CAS will happily meet with interested applicants to think through general project ideas and help you consider other sources of funding. If there are any further questions about the application and requirements, please contact us at [email protected].
