Find Your Fit
Interested in becoming a part of Backpack? We have a variety of entry and mid-level positions on each of our teams, so you’ll be able to find somewhere you excel. These positions will open up as needed at the end of each semester.
CLA Account Team
Content Creator (Entry-Level):
Do you like meeting new people? Are you known for your storytelling skills? Backpack looks for ambitious students with a knack for writing. Content creators are assigned to two departments in the College of Liberal Arts and write four feature stories per semester. Our features highlight student and faculty stories that align with Dean Coleman’s Roadmap goals: research, readiness, engagement, and diversity. The college is a hub for intellectual and creative innovation, so our job is to share these stories with the world. Ideal for freshmen and sophomores.
Web Content Editor (Mid-Level):
A good website conveys information in a straightforward, user-friendly way. Web content editors provide support for CLA departments’ Drupal sites. This includes responding to tickets through ServiceNow, migrating HTML sites to Drupal, leading content audits, and more. The ideal candidate will have an eye for design and a thorough understanding of digital accessibility. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Managing Editor (Mid-Level):
Managing editors (MEs) assist with the creation and production of high-quality, high-impact websites and communications that present a compelling image of the people, activities, and learning environments of the College of Liberal Arts. They oversee a handful of content creators to perform development edits, copy editing, and CLA style guide edits. This position provides an opportunity to develop creative, communication, and administrative skills in the context of digital communications in a higher education setting. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
External Account Team
Account Manager (Entry-Level):
In addition to our work with CLA, Backpack also provides brand communication support to a variety of external clients. Each of these accounts needs a manager. If you’re a people person with strong leadership skills, this could be the right position for you. Duties include client relationship management, campaign proposal and initiation, budget oversight, and more. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Business Manager (Entry-Level):
The business manager serves as the liaison with CLA’s finance and payroll departments, works to create and maintain an agency budget, and works with external clients to prepare and agree upon service agreements. This position is ideal for CLA students who are interested in accounting and budgeting within an agency environment. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Business Development Director (Mid-Level):
The business development director oversees securing new external business relationships for Backpack, working to identify new business opportunities, prepare agency marketing materials, manage outreach to external agencies, prepare new business presentations and manage the transition of new clients to the agency before they are turned over to the account management team. Ideal for juniors.
Do you feel at home behind the lens? Are you the go-to photographer among your friends? Backpack relies heavily on photography for our own branding, hiring campaigns, feature story headshots, and more. In this position, you’ll have the opportunity to meet a variety of different people and contribute to their stories. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Are you a visual storyteller? This could be the job for you. Whether a CLA story needs that special direction or an external client wants a campaign video, we need someone who can capture the message with style and purpose. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Have you always had a way with words? Written word is a staple in communication, and Backpack is unique in the agency world due to our focus on writing. Whether you’re working on posters, websites, or social media, your copy needs to sell our message. Think you have what it takes. Ideal for sophomores and juniors.
Graphic Designer (Mid-Level):
Graphic Designers provide visual communications services for The College of Liberal Arts and external clientele. In the past, Backpack has worked with clients like Faribault Woolen Mill, The Toaster Innovation Hub, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and ServeMinnesota. Working with clients gives our employees the ability to expand their personal portfolios and diversify the content they create. Ideal for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
