Whether you’re just starting your law school exploration process or you’ve already determined that you’re going to pursue a law career, you undoubtedly have many questions and concerns. That’s to be expected: Law school exploration and decision making are complicated! Exciting, too, but complicated just the same.

Help is available from the UMN’s Pre-Law Advising Office! Located in 411 Bruininks Hall, Pre-Law advising offers:

  • Frequent workshops related to law school and careers in law.
  • Individual advising services (both professional and peer-led) for Pre-Law students.

(Important note: 411 Bruininks is the CLA Career Services space, but remember: Pre-Law advising is open to all students and alumni of the university, regardless of college.)

Pre-Law Workshops and Schedule

Pre-Law 101

Are you thinking about going to law school? This workshop is for any UMN student considering it. We'll talk about the skills you need and how to decide if law school is a good fit for you. We'll also provide basic tips about getting into law school and what you can do to prepare.

Applying to Law School

This workshop is open to all UMN students and alumni, but it’s especially for those who know they're going to law school and would like guidance about the application process. We'll discuss application materials and deadlines, as well as how to prepare your materials so that you are the best law school applicant you can be. If you’re currently in the application process for fall 2020 or thinking ahead to fall 2021 admission, this is the place for you.

Personal Statement Workshop Series

These workshops are targeted at writing personal statements for law school and professional health programs. You will learn the basics of a personal statement, how it is used in the admissions process, how to choose a topic and begin writing, and how you can get feedback on your draft. Part 2, the Writing Lab, will allow time for peer reviews, feedback from the Pre-Law advisor, and guidance on next steps.

Personal Statements 101 - Part 1 - Tuesday, September 24th, 4-5pm
Personal Statement Writing Lab - Part 2 - Wednesday, October 16, 3-5pm
