Beginning in Fall 2026 the Center for German and European Studies is pleased to offer a new funding opportunity for advanced graduate students. 

The Europe Immersion Grant is intended to cover flights, accommodation, or incidental living expenses for graduate students who are participating in research, or take courses at a European university during the academic year. The maximum award is $5,000, and three grants will be awarded for the 2026-2027 academic year. Applications are now open until September 1st 2026

  • In order to apply, students must submit a 1-page letter of interest detailing the terms of their study or research at a European university and how it will contribute to their PhD program and research more broadly. 
  • Students must submit confirmation from the host university detailing the terms, and duration of their affiliation with the host university.  
  • Students must submit approval from their department.
  •  Students must submit a budget with estimates for flights, lodging, and living expenses including links to price references, for the duration of their time abroad.

Upon completion of their immersion, students will be asked to submit a 1-page report on their experience including photos.

Student Eligibility:

  • Preference is given to ABD students, however, students intending to do parts of their obligatory coursework at a European University may apply too.    
  • Students must take courses at a European University or join a research group or graduate school, mere affiliation does not suffice
  • Preference is given to students whose work engages German or European studies 

Funding: 

  • Awards are made up to $5,000 based on the budgets students submit. The total award will be disbursed directly to the students’ account. 
  • This award cannot be used to cover fees or health insurance necessary to remain “in status” at the University of Minnesota.
  • Students are responsible for understanding their own financial aid package and as such should check with OneStop to ensure they are eligible to receive additional funding.
