Yeni Escalante Gomez is a junior with a major in sociology of law, criminology & deviance and a minor in Chicano & Latino studies (CLS). She has roots in El Salvador and many of her family members fled the El Salvadorean Civil War, which motivated her to learn more about the conflict. In her Chicano & Latino studies classes, Yeni likes having the opportunity to learn more about her family history and gain insightful knowledge about Latinidad.
Why did you choose to be a Chicano & Latino Studies minor?
The Chicano & Latino studies minor has taught me to love and appreciate my culture. It has also helped me grow as a Latina by teaching me that there is more to Latina/o history and culture than what’s displayed for the mainstream. I enjoy learning about the history of Chicanos and seeing how the community has changed and evolved over the generations. Being able to engage with all of the powerful readings I have encountered in CLS courses has shown me that I have just scratched the surface. There is so much more to learn throughout my life especially after college.
Julia Fultz-Flores graduated in fall 2020 with a major in political science and a minor in Chicano & Latino studies and is currently considering attending law school in order to pursue a career in immigration law. She loves spending time hiking Minnesota’s state parks and always looks forward to planning her next hiking trip.
Why did you choose to be a Chicano & Latino Studies minor?
My decision to be a Chicano & Latino studies minor was fueled by my desire to understand the Chicano history that I had not been taught in my K-12 schooling. I also hoped to enrich my own cultural pride by learning about the activism and mobilizations of Chicana/o peoples over time.
