China has a long history and a complex culture. Its current population of over 1.35 billion is one fifth of the global population. Mandarin Chinese is the official language in the most populous country in the world, spoken by over one billion people in China. Additionally, Chinese communities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, and Mongolia speak Mandarin Chinese.

China's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced, is just behind the United States and growing rapidly. China is one of the largest trading partners of the US, including in Minnesota. As globalization spreads, companies and organizations in and outside the US are seeking professionals that speak fluent Mandarin Chinese and also possess a deep understanding of Chinese culture.
The number of Chinese immersion schools in the US is climbing, and Minnesota is leading the way with ten immersion schools in the metropolitan area. From kindergarten to college, more and more students are learning Mandarin Chinese. Many contemporary business leaders have started their journey to learn the world’s most spoken language.
