Editing Panels & Call-Outs

Call-outs and panels are a WYSIWYG style option.  They can be used in a variety of ways and are typically used to draw attention to particular information on a page.

Creating call-outs and panels

To create a call-out or a panel, put your cursor where you would like the call-out or panel to appear and click on the styles button. Next, choose the call-out option or the option for the type of panel you wish to use.

Call-outs

Call-outs are light blue boxes that span the width of a page (if you would like a more narrow box on one side of the page, use a sidebar panel right).  Call-outs bring attention to important information and can be used in a variety of ways.  Common uses include, calls for action, such as asking users to apply for a scholarship, email a staff member, or visit an art installation.  Call-outs are also used to highlight deadlines, quotes, and supplemental information such as reminders or suggestions.

  • Call-out

    • Appears as a light blue box spanning the width of the page (e.g. calls for action and highlighting/ supplemental information).

  • Call-out Float Left

    • Appears on the left side of the page and will continue to extend toward the right to accommodate the amount of text in the panel.

  • Call-out Float Right

    • Appears on the right side of the page and will continue to extend toward the left to accommodate the amount of text in the panel.

Panels

Panels are gray boxes that are often used as side boxes to display quick important information, such as an advisor’s email, building addresses, or a link to a graduate student handbook. Panels have more layout options:

  • Panel

    • Appears as a gray box spanning the width of the page (e.g. suggestions and supplemental information).

  • Panel Float Left

    • Appears on the left side of the page and will continue to extend toward the right to accommodate the amount of text in the panel.

  • Panel Float Right

    • Appears on the right side of the page and will continue to extend toward the left to accommodate the amount of text in the panel.

  • Panel Sidebar Right

    • Appears on the right side of the page with a predetermined width (e.g. contact information and links to newsletters and handbooks).

“Dont’s” of of using call-outs and panels

  • Don’t use returns to make call-outs and panels look like sidebars.  To make a sidebar, use the sidebar panel right option.  Using returns to create this effect will negatively affect how the information is displayed on smaller screens such as smartphones.

Helpful hints for using panels

  • Headers cannot be used in a panel.  However, the boldfaced font can be used in place of a header.

  • When trying to create a line break, the return/enter key cannot be used alone in a panel as it can be when creating text outside of a panel.  Instead, to create a new line inside of a call-out or panel, you must press and hold the shift key along with the enter/return key.
