Assistant Professor V. V. Ganeshananthan was awarded a Human Rights Initiative Fund faculty research award for the 2017 calendar year for her project "Collected Writings on Sri Lanka." She receives $15,000 to be used toward travel, research, and translation expenses. Sponsored by the University of Minnesota Human Rights Program in the Institute for Global Studies, the Initiative seeks to promote faculty scholarly activities that foster academic excellence in human rights. "We are especially excited about the proposed translation of the work into the local languages of the country," Human Rights Program Director Barbara Frey wrote to Ganeshananthan, "making your art accessible to the very communities it describes." Professor Ganeshananthan is a journalist and novelist who teaches in the Creative Writing Program. She is a member of the board of directors of the American Institute for Lankan Studies.
