John Wright Interviewed on APM
John Wright, Professor of English and African American and African Studies, provides commentary for an American Public Media story on James Van Der Zee. A renowned African American photographer who owned a studio in Harlem, Zee helped his subjects feel beautiful, says Wright, at a time when blackness was not valued in mainstream white culture. The segment is part of the Historically Black series in which listeners submitted personal objects and family photos that speak of lived experiences of black history. The narrator is novelist and essayist Roxane Gay.
