PhD Candidate Awarded Merit Award
Congratulations to PhD candidate Elizabeth Howard, who received a $15,000 Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood for next year! The P.E.O. awards provide merit-based support for women in the US and Canada pursuing doctoral-level degrees. Howard is also now the graduate student representative for the North American Victorian Studies Association's Victorian poetry caucus.
Howard is a scholar of 20th- and 21st-century literature. Last summer she traveled to the Dun Emer archival holdings at the National Library of Ireland, Dublin, to do research for the paper "Stitched Verse: Dun Emer Industries, Publication, and the Manipulation of Gender Expectations," which she presented at the North American Victorian Studies Association Conference in in October. She is continuing to explore how, through Dun Emer, Elizabeth and Lily Yeats advanced "the development and preservation of Irish finely crafted hand-arts as well as the profile and cause of women, particularly lower class Irish women" in early 20th-century Ireland.
