English Major Spotlight: Cassidy Maneval
Year: Junior
Hometown: Cannon Falls, MN
Why did you choose to major in English?
Coming into college I had no idea what I wanted to major in. I had always loved reading books and writing, but I also had a lot of other interests that could lead to a major, so I was a little stuck. During my first year I took a Shakespeare class with Professor Katherine Scheil and then "Textual Analysis: Methods" with Lecturer Heather Holcombe. Both classes were amazing, and they sparked my interest in becoming an English major.
What has been your favorite part of your experience in the department?
Going to Fellowship of Undergraduate Students in English (FUSE) events. These events have allowed me to better connect with my peers outside of class and are always super fun. I even became the secretary for FUSE this year which has led me to creating monthly newsletters and attending even more trivia nights, book swaps, and craft events.
Are you pursuing any majors, minors, internships, or interests outside your English major?
I am pursuing a Creative Writing minor and a Certificate in Editing and Publishing. Being a Creative Writing minor allows me to use my imagination to create stories and workshop with my peers. I am hoping to have a career in editing and publishing. This year I was able to be a part of The Tower as a nonfiction editor, which has been a rewarding experience.
What is a favorite book you read for a UMN English class?
Tracks by Louise Erdrich.
What English course(s) would you especially recommend?
"Weird Books by Women and Gender-variant Writers" and "Intermediate Fiction Writing."
