Why did you choose to major in English?

I chose to major in English because I love reading, writing, and studying literature. I am fascinated by the English language!

"FUSE is great because it
fosters a sense of community
among English majors."

What has been your favorite part of your experience in the department?

My favorite experience in the department has been leading FUSE (Fellowship of Undergraduate Students in English). I enjoy sponsoring events for the department, meeting fellow majors, and working with my co-officers!

Are you pursuing any majors, minors, internships, or interests outside your English major?

I am minoring in Technical Writing and Communication (TWC) and Linguistics. I am very active in the Department of Writing Studies, and I hope to work as the Director of First-Year Writing at a university one day. Besides my future career plans, I interned as an editorial assistant over the summer, and I really enjoyed the experience. I'm hoping to complete another publishing or editorial internship experience in the future.

What English course would you recommend for majors? For non-majors who want to take an English class?

For majors, I would recommend taking "Old English" with Professor Andrew Scheil. It's a fun class! For nonmajors (and majors as well), I would recommend taking "Children's Literature." The class explores children's literature and young adult fiction as a literary genre. You get to reread the books you read as a kid!

What is something about the English department that people might not know?

We have a wonderful student group led by a great group of people. If you haven't joined FUSE yet, what are you waiting for? FUSE is great because it fosters a sense of community among English majors. Feel free to reach out to me (voss0166@umn.edu) to join.

Best book or movie you've read/seen recently?

I really like the movie Booksmart. If you haven't seen it yet, I totally recommend it. I also just reread Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
