Why did you choose to major in English?

I love to read and talk about books—surprising, I know. Ever since my freshman year of high school, English classes have been my favorite part of the day. Now, almost all of my day is full of English classes, and it’s a dream.

What has been your favorite part of your experience in the department?

Having thoughtful discussions about books with my peers. I love being a part of a community that values reading as much as I do. I especially like the challenge to read outside of my comfort zone—as an English major, I’ve had the chance to seek out courses that feature an array of diverse perspectives and experiences.

Are you pursuing any majors, minors, internships, or interests outside your English major?

I am pursuing minors in art and creative writing and the certificate in editing and publishing. I am also currently the co-Editor in Chief of The Tower undergraduate literary magazine, the Managing Editor at The Wake student magazine, and a writing consultant at the Center for Writing’s Student Writing Support. These opportunities have given me the chance to develop my writing and editing skills outside the classroom, and to work with the talented writers in the University of Minnesota community.

What English course would you recommend for majors? For non-majors who want to take an English class?

If you are interested in a career in publishing, I highly recommend "The Business of Publishing." The opportunity to meet so many professionals in the field has been unparalleled. For non-English majors and English majors alike, I suggest taking a class with Professor Julie Schumacher. My "Writing Young Adult Fiction" class with her made me fall in love with writing all over again.

Best book you've read recently?

I recently finished Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas, and it was incredible! I love queer literature and magical realism, so this book was an absolute treat. I also read A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles this summer and loved it. I highly recommend both.
