Scholarships for Transfer Students

CLA Scholarships for Transfer Students

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA), in partnership with generous collegiate benefactors, is proud to offer a multitude of scholarships to transfer students. Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic achievement, financial need, special talents, interests, and qualities, or other criteria defined by the scholarship donor. Transfer applicants are those who apply to the College of Liberal Arts from outside the University of Minnesota with at least 26 semester credits (earned after graduation from high school).

How do I apply for scholarships?
Scholarships are awarded based on your admission application to CLA as well as our CLA Transfer Scholarship application. Students are reviewed for scholarships both through the admissions process and the CLA Transfer Scholarship application. CLA looks to offer multiple avenues to support future transfer student in being considered for collegiate scholarships.

What scholarships are available?
The typical transfer scholarship from CLA is a collegiate award of $1,000 to $5,000 per year, for up to three years, depending on the college credits already earned. These scholarships are based on criteria established by the donors for each scholarship. For example, criteria may include scholastic achievement, consistency of academic record, extracurricular and leadership activities, major and career objectives, place of residence, grade level, or financial need, etc.

In addition to collegiate scholarships, students are offered awards through recruiting CLA departments as well as experiential learning programs. An example of the unique scholarships CLA offers is below:

Dean’s First-Year Research & Creative Scholars Program: First-year students to CLA who express an interest in research will be considered for a one-year research scholarship program. Students learn about research in liberal arts and are paired with a faculty mentor to gain experience. There is no application for this program. Additional information found here

How are recipients selected?
The Scholarship Committee will assess admission applications and CLA Transfer Scholarship Applications and make decisions based on the information submitted.

How will I be notified?
Award notices will be sent by the College of Liberal Arts to recipients on a rolling basis. If you also applied for financial aid (completed the FAFSA or a DREAM act equivalent), you will receive a second letter in late July that outlines your complete financial aid package, including grants, scholarships, loans, expected parental contribution, etc.

If I don't receive a scholarship as an incoming transfer student, are there other opportunities to apply for scholarships?
Yes. For information, see our scholarship information for current CLA students.

We strongly encourage all future freshmen and transfer students to:
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (code 003969) or a Dream Act Application, available at the Minnesota Office of Higher Education Dream Act website, for financial need consideration
