FLAS Fellowships Competition for 2017-2018

October 19, 2016
The Institute for Global Studies and its partner centers, the African Studies Initiative and the Consortium for the Study of the Asias, are proud to offer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students. FLAS fellowships promote language study -- particularly less commonly taught languages -- paired with international and/or area studies. See our Funding page for more information.

FLAS fellowships help students build their foreign language skills through courses at the University of Minnesota, programs at other US Institutions, and intensive language programs abroad. Forty-six FLAS fellowships were awarded in summer 2016 and AY 2016-17 for the study of languages from Amharic to Zulu. Students from eighteen different departments received FLAS fellowships to study twenty languages in seventeen countries.

We invite all UMN students interested in foreign languages and area studies to consider applying for a FLAS. Applications for summer 2017 and AY 2017-18 are due by Feburary 6, 2017. For more information, please join us for an information session:
