The artist, writer, and former political prisoner Gabriele Stötzer is best known for organizing East Germany’s first and only feminist art collective, the Künstlerinnengruppe based in Erfurt. Stötzer not only initiated the group, but sustained it. This care work is particularly evident in her photo books, where the artist's aesthetic of repetition imparts the intimacy she shared with the people she photographed. In this talk, Dr. Sara Blaylock argues that the power of Stötzer's photo books rests within the sincerity, the time, and the range of self-presentation the artist affords in her subjects. These works impart a sensation of presence and surrender, an unfolding that is radical because it is patient.

A light lunch will be served for those attending in-person; the event will also be streamed. Zoom link: https://umn.zoom.us/j/92839812022
