Study Abroad

The department has scholarships and grants for undergraduate students who will study abroad in German-speaking countries either in summer or the next academic year. There is also a scholarship for study abroad in Iceland. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, with some consideration given to financial need.

The Scholarships:

  • Frank D. Hirschbach Scholarship for Study Abroad in a German-speaking Country
A $3,000 scholarship was established in honor of Frank D. Hirschbach, who was committed to developing and directing study abroad programs to Germany and Austria. This scholarship is open to undergraduates in any field for study. Preference is given to students studying abroad for one or both terms of the academic year, but the committee will consider summer programs as well.
  • Study Abroad in Iceland. This $3000 scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students in any field.
  • Junior Year in Munich (JYM) Scholarship
This $2000 scholarship helps an undergraduate major or minor in our program to participate in the Wayne State Junior Year in Munich (JYM) Program. The JYM Program also has scholarships, including some specifically for University of Minnesota Twin Cities students.
  • Max Kade Travel Grants for Study in Germany
Up to 4 travel grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to support our undergraduate majors who will be participating in a study program or internship in Germany. The program can be for the summer, fall semester, or the academic year (fall & spring).
