Hear our Voices! May 15th event at the State Capitol

May 27, 2017

Over 300 Parkway Montessori and middle school students marched to the Capitol to share their vision for Minnesota’s present and future with MN lawmakers and policymakers. For the past three months, they worked with undergraduate students in the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota to share their social justice stories, concerns, and visions. They went to share the digital stories and zines they have created about social justice issues including immigration, neighborhood violence, gender equality, climate change, bullying, mental health, public school education, and institutional racism.

10,000 Stories is a public-engagement project by Jigna Desai and Kari Smalkoski in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (College of Liberal Arts). They are partnering with the teachers and students at Parkway Montessori and Middle School (St. Paul Public Schools) to amplify youth voices through social justice storytelling and media-making, increase civic participation, and foster college readiness.
