Faculty Funding Opportunities

Call for proposals, February 2020

The Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute is pleased to help advance and accelerate the research priorities of faculty members in the Department of Economics. There are currently three ways that faculty members can access funding.

1.  Heller-Hurwicz Faculty Research Awards

Each year Heller-Hurwicz will issue a call for proposals with the approximate timing:

  • Issue Call for Proposals – March 1
  • Submissions Due – April 1
  • Grants Awarded – May 1
  • Funds Available – September 1

Faculty members will submit a formal proposal to Heller-Hurwicz including an abstract, a description of the proposed research (not to exceed three pages), a budget, and a CV for the principal investigators and any co-investigators.

2.  Heller-Hurwicz Faculty Travel Awards

A faculty member who is invited to speak at an academic conference and does not have access to other department funding can apply for up to $5,000 of support per year

The faculty member must have a working paper that is:

  1. Available on a University of Minnesota affiliated website
  2. Not already forthcoming in a journal
  3. Accepted for presentation at one of the conferences below:
  • American Economic Association
  • Game Theory Society
  • Econometric Society
  • National Bureau of Economic Research
  • Society for Economic Dynamics

Faculty members will submit a formal letter of request to Heller-Hurwicz describing their research, the relevance of the travel opportunity, and the travel budget. These requests will be approved or denied on a rolling basis.

3.  Heller-Hurwicz Basic Needs Awards

  • Faculty members who do not have access to other departmental funding can apply for up to $2,500 per fiscal year to support basic needs necessary for continuing their research. This primarily includes computers, software, data, and data storage.
  • Faculty members will submit a formal letter of request to Heller-Hurwicz describing their research, the need and importance of the purchase, and the cost.
  • The letter of request should also identify other potential sources of funding that were already explored; our goal is to support necessary expenses that cannot be covered through other sources.
  • These requests will be approved or denied on a rolling basis.

The following conditions apply to ALL funds granted through Heller-Hurwicz:

  1. Heller-Hurwicz is housed within the University of Minnesota and therefore all University of Minnesota policies regarding expenses and reimbursements must be followed.
  2. Requests for funding must be approved before any expenses are incurred.
  3. Faculty members must have an active appointment and cannot be on leave.
  4. Faculty members must be willing to share their research findings and raise visibility for Heller-Hurwicz’s mission through the following activities:
    • Presenting findings to the Advisory Board
    • Participating in an interview for the website
    • Having the paper available on the Heller-Hurwicz website
