What is the History Book Club?

The History Book Club is a monthly event series that brings together alumni, faculty, students, and friends of the History Department to engage virtually with our faculty and graduates, and learn about their recently published books.

Do I need to read the book to attend this gathering?

You do not! Our History Book Club gatherings are designed to be enjoyed by any history-lover, whether or not you’ve read the featured book.

About the book

This book provides a study of the Girls' Friendly Society to examine how the construction of girlhood was intricately tied to constructions of whiteness and ideas of empire. It uses correspondences, newsletters, scrapbooks, and photographs to reveal the often-overlooked role of girls in the British empire.

About the hosts

Elizabeth Dillenburg (PhD 2019), is an assistant professor of history. She specializes in the history of modern Europe with a particular focus on the history of Britain and the British Empire and teaches courses on European and global history, gender history, the history of childhood, and the history of colonialism.

Rachel Neiwert (PhD 2009),  is an associate professor of history and the Sr. Mona Riley Endowed Professor in the Humanities at St. Catherine University.
