The Minnesota Daily

The Minnesota Daily is an independent, student-produced newspaper on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. The paper is published Monday through Friday during the fall and spring, and on Wednesdays during the summer. A non-profit corporation with tax-exempt status, The Daily operates as a training institution, governed by a Board of Directors, who each year select an editor-in-chief, business manager and president to run the newspaper as the Office of the Publisher.

More than 100 years old, The Daily has grown from a small arts weekly founded near the 19th century's close to become one of the nation's largest college newspapers and one of the very few that are entirely student-operated. Though a portion of The Daily's funding comes from a fee assessed to all students on campus taking classes full-time, the majority of its publishing costs are covered by selling advertisements.

National Scholastic Press Association

The National Scholastic Press Association, based and incorporated in Minnesota as a non-profit educational association, provides journalism education services to students, teachers, media advisers and others throughout the United States and in other countries.

NSPA has three divisions. Memberships for middle school, junior high school and high school student media are organized under the National Scholastic Press Association division of NSPA. Memberships for college, university and professional and technical school student media are organized under the Associated Collegiate Press division of NSPA. Middle school, junior high school and high school student media in Minnesota are organized under the Minnesota High School Press Association division of NSPA. Memberships are open to all student media at public and private schools at an annual membership fee.

NSPA is to be governed, in accordance with its bylaws, by a board of directors consisting of three faculty members of the School of Journalism & Mass Communication (SJMC) at the University of Minnesota, where NSPA has its headquarters, and at least three other board members representing the range of high school, college and Minnesota high school student media served by NSPA and its ACP and MHSPA divisions.

Databases and Supporting Resources

The Communication Research Lab/Focus Group Room in 314 Murphy Hall is a jewel for supporting a wide-range of communication-related studies and data collection. This small, centrally located campus research facility offers an intimate setting and wealth of resources for graduate and faculty research.

Subject Pool

The SJMC Research Division maintains a Subject Pool and is the school’s liaison with the University’s Human Subjects Committee. The Subject Pool runs throughout the academic year using students enrolled in journalism classes.


The SJMC has a collection starting in the 1980s of the top 10 broadcast and cable tv entertainment shows and newscasts. Many of these have been coded.

DDB Needham Life Style Study

The DDB Needham Life Style Study is an annual mail panel survey that has been conducted every year since 1975. The sample of 2,000 male and 2,000 female heads-of-household is matched to the U.S. population on age, income, and area of residence. Response rates have varied slightly from year to year, but have averaged around 80%. The Life Style questionnaire contains more than 500 questions covering diverse activities, interests, attitudes and opinions.

MRI/Simmons Market Research

Mediamark Research Inc. (MRI) and Simmons Market Research Bureau (SMRB) are two of the major syndicated research houses. MRI’s Survey of the American Consumer produces the country’s largest and most current database of consumer behavior, media usage and consumer motivations. The Survey is an encyclopedic repository of consumer insights. MRI collects its data through more than 26,000 interviews with consumers throughout the country.

SMRB has been a leading chronicler of the American consumer for over 50 years. From the products that all Americans buy and the brands they prefer, to their Internet shopping behaviors, attitudes, lifestyles and media that they use, Simmons measures over 30,000 American consumers each year and includes the largest representation of all Americans, including Hispanic, African-American, Asian and other consumers to provide the most complete picture available on America's consumers.

Eric Sevareid Library and UMN Libraries

A plethora of resources exists in the SJMC’s Eric Sevareid Library (located in the basement of Murphy Hall) and the University’s Libraries. In the Sevareid Library, there are journalism and advertising databases, access to the top journalism blogs, resources on ethics and professional issues, radio resources and much more. Additionally, the SJMC has a dedicated journalism librarian onsite weekly in the Sevareid Library to assist with and support scholarly research.
