HSJMC allows students to create, discover, network, and grow through opportunities like staff positions on The Minnesota Daily. Students also produce high-quality work in their courses, including a magazine and accompanying website, advertising and public relations campaigns, broacasts, and apps.
For newswriting and reporting, SJMC students work in a number of newsrooms around the Twin Cities as part of partnerships with local news organizations. Our practicums allow students to work with editors and have clips published in the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune, as well as a number of local community newspapers. Innovative partnerships with various news outlets such as MinnPost and Minnesota Public Radio allow our students to continue growing their portfolios.
Broadcast students learn to master the use of digital cameras and non-linear editing systems. Students also learn how to better write to video and how to improve their voice work and on-camera performance. Before shooting, writing, and editing TV news packages, students research potential reports. At the end of the course, students use their work to create a resume tape. JOUR 4451 students may also contribute reporting, writing, producing and anchoring.
