LGBT Immigrant Stories

Like much LGBT history, that of LGBT immigrants has been silenced--through acts of state policing and self-silencing. In recent years, scholars have begun to work on the various intersections of gender and sexuality with border policing and immigrant identities. For this event we were very lucky to have two of the most influential scholars working on these topics: Professors Eithne Luibheid (University of Arizona) and Martin Manlansan (University of Illinois).

Organized in partnership with the Jean Nickolaus Trettor Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies, this event featured a special screening of LGBT Immigrant Digital Stories. Professor Luibheid gave a keynote talk that established a historical understanding of the relationships between gender and sexuality in the frame of U.S. immigration. Professor Manalansan moderated a discussion between the audience, Professor Luibheid, and invited LGBT storytellers.
