Asian American Disability: History, Archives, Methods

In a special issue of the Journal of American Ethnic History, Naoko Wake traced the ways in which “Asian American experiences of disability have been made invisible,” and argued that ableism shaped the experiences of Asian immigrants as profoundly as racism did. The Immigration History Research Center presents this panel of experts, drawing together the contributors to the special issue for a conversation on the history, archives, and methods of Asian American disability, with commentary from Feminist Studies and Asian American Studies scholar Jigna Desai. The Journal of American Ethnic History and University of Illinois press have generously agreed to make the special issue open access from March 15-April 15 so that panel attendees can engage with this important work.

Featuring:

Jigna Desai, University of CA Santa Barbara

Jonathan Hsy, George Washington University

Selena Moon, University of MN

Jennifer Row, University of MN

Naoko Wake, Michigan State University

Alice Zhang, Florida State University

Co-sponsored by the Asian American Studies Program, the Critical Disability Studies Collective, and the Department of History.
