Certificates of Advanced Proficiency Move Online

This month, approximately fifteen students of Chinese, French, German, and Spanish have the opportunity to complete the Certificate of Advanced Proficiency in their language. These certificate programs are intended for undergraduate students who are interested in achieving advanced-level proficiency, and having their skills formally recognized.

One difference from previous semesters: the final ACTFL tests are administered online, rather than in a computer classroom.

The French, German, and Spanish certificate programs already included two online elements managed through Canvas: a self-assessment and a critical reflection essay. However, students needed to come to campus for the final requirement, the challenging four-part ACTFL test. When it became clear that in-person testing was not an option for this semester, the Language Testing program and Language Center Tech Team developed a plan to remotely proctor the exams. They are being administered to small groups of students, using a mix of technology and live remote proctoring. Because remote proctoring must be done in smaller groups than classroom testing, students have more scheduling options. Students who cannot test remotely will be invited to test on campus once the classrooms in Jones reopen.

This is the second standardized proficiency test to move online this semester, as the online LPE Screening Test started last week. You can keep up with all the changes in test administration at the Testing Updates page.
