Fall 2020 – Film Streaming and Digitization Options
Do you need to assign films for your Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 classes? The UMN Libraries and the Language Center are here for you.
We recommend starting with a visit to the Libraries guide for licensed and cost free options or searching the online catalog. You may find the film you’re looking for or make a new discovery. Choosing licensed online content (e.g. Kanopy), available through these collections, is the best option for assigning film screenings while respecting Fair Use principles. Please note that the Libraries can not guarantee long-term access to films and other restrictions apply.
Don’t see what you’re looking for, and either the Language Center or your department has a DVD copy? The Language Center is still digitizing films for LC Elevator. The Language Center is now primarily remote, and since the remote digitization process takes longer, we are asking for two weeks' lead time if possible. Here’s what to do:
- Submit your digitization requests
- If your media is not in the Language Center collection, it can be delivered to Jones 110 in one of the following ways:
- Sign up for pick up / drop off day
- Put it in the media slot outside Jones 110 (you’ll need a UCard to access the building)
- Send it to Jones 110 via Campus Mail
- Once your films are digitized, use the Canvas/Elevator integration to share them with your students
Please review the Libraries Fair Use resources, and use its Fair Use tool before you decide to request a new film to be digitized or assign a digitized film to students
